Community Heating Schemes: Just For Social Housing?

Community heating schemes are currently extremely popular and sought after by many different Housing Associations and local authorities across the UK.

What exactly makes these such an attractive heating option for those responsible for social housing ? And is it worth having in properties that are not social housing?

The answer to the latter question is that communal heating is suited to many different types of properties that have different purposes – not just residential properties. In fact, many institutions around the UK utilise forms of district heating (the heating of multiple buildings through a single, power plant).

Many universities up and down the UK use this form of heating – such as the University of Aberdeen, Queen's University in Belfast, the University of East Anglia and Swansea University. Many hospitals also utilise forms of heating schemes such as the Royal Preston Hospital, Peterborough City Hospital and King's College Hospital in London. And, of course, many estates, communities and housing associations also run heat networks. This can be seen as far north as Lerwick on the Shetland Isles; and as far south as Truro in Cornwall.

Commercial or non-profit properties and buildings also use such heat schemes – including country parks, sports centres and blocks of town centre stores. In fact, buildings within the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London are also heated by a district or communal heating network. So, as you can see, decentralised heating is apparent in all aspects of life. The major reason for its popularity is its ability to reduce energy wastage and provide a low carbon energy heating emission footprint.

So whatever the purpose of the property you are currently developing, community heating schemes offer a viable low-carbon solution. At Evinox Energy Ltd, we are the communal heat specialists.
